Alan Tomlinson qualified at Bradford and after earning a
Master's degree (University of Bradford, England) in 1968 and a PhD degree
(University of Manchester) in 1971. In 1999 he was awarded the DSc
degree by the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology
for contributions to research in contact lenses and anterior ocular surface
physiology. He has held academic appointments at two Schools of
Optometry in England and four in the United States. He was a Lecturer at UMIST
and a full Professor at Indiana University and the Southern California
College of Optometry. In addition, Dr Tomlinson has been engaged in the
contact lens industry, as a clinical research director for a major US
manufacturer. Professor Tomlinson holds higher diplomas in the practice
of Contact Lenses from the College of Optometry of which he is a
Fellow. In 1976 he was awarded the Research Medal of the British Optical
Association. A Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, he has published
over 100 papers in refereed journals and has given more than 200 invited
lecture presentations at major meetings, academic institutions and
professional organisations in the United States, Europe, South America and
Australia. He is the author of a textbook on Complications of Contact
Lens Wear published by Mosby. Alan Tomlinson is currently Professor of Vision
Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University. Current contact lens research interests are illustrated by
the following research publications: Salicylate
